- Cindy -People often ask me about my favorite places to travel and Alaska is always near the top.  In fact, I've been there four times and would happily go again.  To be immersed in nature at such a grand scale is both an exhilarating and humbling experience.

This is why I'm so excited about Shauna's June 2025 group trip to Alaska.  This is a cruise/tour where the first part of the trip will be spent in Denali National Park and then taking the incomparable Alaskan railway into Anchorage.

From Anchorage, you'll travel to Whittier where you'll board your Holland America ship for a cruise along the Inside Passage to Vancouver with stops in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.  Holland America is one of the most experienced cruise lines in Alaska - they celebrated 75 years last year.  You'll also make a swing through Glacier Bay National Park which is spectacular.

destination of the week
denali national park

A trip to Alaska is simply incomplete without experiencing Denali National Park. At its core rises North America's tallest mountain, the beautiful 20,310-foot Denali. Countless other peaks of the greater Alaska Range arch across the park lands. This forms a natural barrier between the huge glaciers and silty rivers to the south, and the rolling hills and drier taiga of the north.
The park's six million acres encompass a complete sub-arctic ecosystem that's home to large mammals like grizzly bears, wolves, Dall sheep, caribou, and moose. In fact, it was the desire to protect area wildlife, specifically Dall sheep, that led to the creation of what was then called Mount McKinley National Park in 1917.
Aside from the popular bus tours that take you deep within Denali National Park, the whole Denali Park area offers so many things to do it can be difficult to settle one just a few. To start, be sure to take time to explore the park's Visitors Center to become acquainted with the local history and wildlife. From here you can head out onto a series of accessible interpretive trails. If a guided walk sounds appealing, reserve a spot on the Denali Interpretive Hike.
If adventure is on your bucket list, try soaring above Denali's ridges and craggy glaciers aboard a flightseeing excursion, or ride the waters of Nenana River on a rafting trip.
Since sled dog teams are an Alaskan icon, a visit to the Denali Park sled dog kennel is a fun way to learn about (and meet) the National Park Service's only working sled dog team. For a closer look at Alaska's renowned husky dogs and the life of a musher, book a DogGoneIt Kennel Tour.

travel tip of the week
best time to visit denali

It's best to visit Denali National Park from June through early September. Depending on the snow conditions, the Denali Park Road may not fully open till the first weeks of June, limiting access by some guided bus tours. The road closes to all bus traffic by the second week of September.
