happy halloween!  a look at sleepy hollow, ny

I must admit that I am not a fan of spooky things.  Ghost tours, haunted hayrides, horror movies - just no thank you!

However, I think almost everyone remembers the tale of The Headless Horseman by Washington Irving.  This short story takes place in Sleepy Hollow, NY and the images of Ichabod Crane trying to get to the church for safety via the cemetery are still vivid for me, even years after reading the story.

Sleepy Hollow, New York offers tours of the cemetery, the Old Dutch Church and other aspects of The Headless Horseman.  The bridge where the chase took place is still there among other locations mentioned in the story.  Sleepy Hollow is in a beautiful area of New York and would make a fun October trip.  You can combine spooky with literature and history and sprinkle in scenic on top of everything!!

Happy Halloween to All!  Maybe it be a spooky (or not!) as you wish!

destination of the week
sleepy hollow, new york

From the ghoulish events and lantern lights of Halloween to tours of historic estates and lazy summer day picnics in the park to experiencing The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, Sleepy Hollow is full of things to do any time of the year. If you love history, food, architecture, and nature, you’ll want to put Sleepy Hollow on your list of places to go.

Originally incorporated as North Tarrytown in the late 19th century, the village adopted its current name in 1996. The village is known internationally through "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", an 1820 short story about the local area and its infamous specter, the Headless Horseman, written by Washington Irving, who lived in Tarrytown and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Owing to this story, as well as the village's roots in early American history and folklore, Sleepy Hollow is considered by some to be one of the "most haunted places in the world". Despite this designation, Sleepy Hollow has also been called "the safest small 'city' [i.e., under 100,000 residents] in America".  Click on the link below for a listing of Halloween activities in Sleepy Hollow:

travel tip of the week
sleepy hollow cemetery

The cemetery is a prominent feature in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and it’s a good place to begin your orientation to the town. Irving is buried in the cemetery, but don’t expect to get too close to his grave, though — it is protected by a fence. If you visit during the month of October, you will likely find throngs of young people in costumes in the cemetery. In addition to Irving, the cemetery is the final resting place for a number of historical figures, including Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden, and Brooke and Vincent Astor. You’ll also find memorials for Civil War soldiers.
