Relax in martha's vineyard

6/21/2024

I have always been interested in Martha's Vineyard.  I've read books that were set there and, of course, the move Jaws was filmed in Martha's Vineyard.  Other than the sharks, the movie offered many gorgeous views of the Island.

The only way into Martha's Vineyard is by ferry or air. This increases the appeal for me as it's a step away from the craziness of summer crowds.  Many of the beaches have access by hiking in and this just feels like you could truly unwind and enjoy the dog days of summer.

We have so many interesting places in the U.S. to vacation.  Why not check out Martha's Vineyard for some time away?

Destination of the week
martha's vineyard

Located seven miles off Cape Cod in Massachusetts, it's less than a ninety minute drive from Boston. Featured in many movies and even a reality show, Martha's Vineyard got the world-wide recognition and glamorous image for being a summer playground for celebrities and artists who come to "The Rock" to enjoy the peace and privacy it provides. The Island is also a chosen spot for presidential vacations , premier corporate events, fundraising, auctions, and one of the top five wedding destinations in the United States with most engagements, honeymoons and "tying the knot" ceremonies happening during the "shoulder seasons" (spring and fall).

Martha’s Vineyard was given its name in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold, who led the first recorded European expedition to Cape Cod. Gosnold named it for his little daughter Martha and the wild grapes abundant around. The Vineyard is virtually divided into two parts:  "Down-Island" eastern part of the Island with the most populous towns of Oak Bluffs, Tisbury (also known as Vineyard Haven) and Edgartown with the Island of Cappaquiddick (Chappy); less densely populated western part "Up-Island" with three rural communities in Chilmark, Aquinnah and West Tisbury. Martha's Vineyard is a part of Dukes County which also embraces the Elizabeth Islands, lying several miles west of the Vineyard across the waters of Vineyard Sound.

Free of fast food and chain stores, part of the Island's appeal is the way the Vineyard has preserved its heritage, charm, and character. This laid back island has quaint little villages with roots that go back for generations, drawing summer residents here for centuries. Don't forget the scenic sandy beaches surrounding the island. There's Aquinnah beach , with its gorgeous multicolor Gay Head clay cliffs and breath-taking ocean views; wild surf spot South Beach in Katama ; popular Oak Bluffs-Edgartown state beach; pristine and private Lambert's Cove beach in West Tisbury, and many others.

Martha's Vineyard has something for everyone. Experience romantic sunsets with a glass of wine and fresh seafood in Menemsha ; visit organic farms, markets, and galleries in rural West Tisbury; relax on a country drive in Chilmark with its New England stone walls, horse stables and grazing cattle; go glamorous with shopping, fine dining and strolling in the heart of Edgartown ; and enjoy playtime in Oak Bluffs with fishing, golfing, water sports and recreational activities.

Travel tip of the week
see the lighthouse of martha's vineyard

Along with beautiful Cape Cod style homes, lighthouses make up that quintessential New England landscape on Martha’s Vineyard. If you’re staying in or near Edgartown, then it’s just a short walk or drive to Edgartown Harbor Light, a picture-perfect white lighthouse you can walk right up to and go inside during open hours. It’s located on a small beach and gives you a beautiful view of Edgartown and waterfront homes.

Virtual vacation of the week

Lobster on the deck, sunset on the beach and long nights on the town are all part of Martha’s Vineyard island allure.  This video has ideas for what to do in Martha's Vineyard.
