Its signature attraction is the sight of hundreds of big-tusked elephants set against the backdrop of Africa’s best views of Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m). Africa’s highest peak broods over the southern boundary of the park, and while cloud cover can render the mountain’s massive bulk invisible for much of the day, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas when the weather clears, usually at dawn and/or dusk. Apart from guaranteed elephant sightings, you’ll also see wildebeest and zebras, and you’ve a reasonable chance of spotting lions, cheetahs and hyenas. The park is also home to over 370 bird species, and it has an excellent array of lodges and an agreeably mild, dry climate. Overnight at your hotel. Lewa Safari Camp has a stunning location within the prolific Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, sprawling over the Laikipia plains, with outstanding game viewing from camp and unsurpassed views of Mount Kenya to the south. Popular with celebrities, conservationists, writers and photographers, Lewa Safari Camp hit the headlines with tales of Royal romance. Underpinning the glamour is a serious mission: Lewa Safari Camp pioneered pragmatic conservation in the 1970’s, developing a world-renowned, successful rhino conservation habitat. Wildlife viewing is spectacular here, with lion, leopard, cheetah and jackal thriving on the rich diversity of prey. The 26,300 hectare (65,000 acre) conservancy is home to ten percent of Kenya’s black rhino and 15 percent of Kenya’s white rhino population, and the single largest population of Grevy’s zebra in the world. The conservancy also holds a substantial population of sitatunga – a spectacular aquatic antelope, which is extremely rare in Kenya. Overnight at your hotel. DAY 9 : MAY 25 : LEWA CONSERVANCY GAME DRIVES Breakfast at your hotel followed by morning and afternoon shared game drives in the Lewa Conservancy. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, based at the foothills of Mount Kenya, works as a model and catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat. They do this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programs, and the education of neighboring areas in the value of wildlife. For the last three decades, their practices have resulted in thriving black rhino habitat and population, which in turn has created a robust ecosystem for a multitude of species including the endangered Grevy’s zebra, elephant, lion, cheetah, giraffe and more. They envision a future where people across Kenya value, protect and benefit from wildlife. This future depends on communities being able to derive their day-to-day livelihoods in ways that are compatible with thriving wildlife habitat. As a result, they invest heavily in the livelihoods of their neighbors through programs in education, healthcare, water, micro-enterprise, youth empowerment and more. As a catalyst and champion of this model that puts people at the center of conservation, Lewa has influenced and supported the conservancy management for both private and community lands across northern Kenya. Lewa has combined the techniques of world-class anti-poaching operations, including cutting edge monitoring technology, with the engagement of the surrounding communities as critical partners in conservation.
