An Opportunity To Experience Bavaria, Germany

8/16/2024

Bavaria is an area of Germany that is known for it's stunning scenery, quaint villages and it's unique Bavarian culture.   This “must-see” area should be on everyone's travel list.

This is why the 2025 Chef Jeff's Culinary group trip to Germany has  the villages of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the itinerary.  These twin villages are nestled in the Bavarian Alps and are known for being a winter ski mecca and offering amazing hiking in the summer.  The culinary group will participate in a cooking class, take a cog wheel train to the highest mountain in Germany and immerse themselves in Bavarian hospitality.

Of course, no trip to Bavaria is complete without sampling the beer.  However, wine lovers do not despair!  Throughout this culinary tour there will be time to stop in the vineyards of Germany to sample some lovely wines.  Something for everyone.

Destination of the week
Garmisch-Partenkirchen; Bavaria, Germany

The double-barreled resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is blessed with a fabled setting just a snowball’s throw from the Alps and is a top hang-out for outdoorsy types, skiing fans and day-trippers from Munich. To say you ‘wintered in Garmisch’ still has an aristocratic ring, and the area offers some of the best skiing in the land, including runs on Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze (2962m).

Garmisch-Partenkirchen boasts some of the best skiing in Germany. Located at the base of the country's tallest mountain, year round glacial snow is guaranteed. The "Happy Ski Pass" can be purchased for use of four ski areas in that area in both Austria and Germany: Seefeld, Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the region "Tiroler Zugspitz Arena"

During the winter the slopes surrounding the town are amazing for skiers and sightseers alike. During the summer months, hours can be spent hiking the many trails (such as around the Eibsee) and enjoying the panoramic views. There is a cogwheel train trip up to the top of the Zugspitze mountain which is an event in itself and a cable car descent with amazing views.

Less than an hour's drive from Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is not to be missed.

travel tip of the week
tips for travel in bavaria

Learn Basic German Phrases: While many Bavarians speak English, it’s always appreciated when you attempt to speak the local language. Simple phrases like "Bitte" (please), "Danke" (thank you), and "Sprechen Sie Englisch?" (Do you speak English?) can go a long way.

Respect Local Customs: Bavarians take their traditions seriously. For example, make sure to dress appropriately when visiting churches, and if you’re attending Oktoberfest, follow the drinking etiquette.

Enjoy the Local Cuisine: Don’t miss out on Bavarian specialties such as pretzels, sausages, and beer. Visiting a traditional beer hall or garden is a must for an authentic experience.

Plan for the Weather: The weather in Bavaria can be unpredictable. Pack layers and be prepared for rain, especially if you’re visiting the Alps or doing outdoor activities.
